Dear Hanuman,
Please accept my best wishes. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
The present period is exceptionally busy for me, so I am not able to reply
to your concerns in detail just now. But I am attaching a message I sent on
the occasion of the opening of Bhaktivedanta Hospital, which expressses not
only how I viewed the project then but also pretty much how I see it now.
Thank you. Hare Krishna.
May this meet you in good health and Krishna consciousness.
Yours in service to Srila Prabhupada,
Giriraj Swami

My dear devotees, guests, and friends,
Please accept my best wishes on the occasion of the opening of Bhaktivedanta Hospital. All glories to His Divine Grace, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupÀda.
Many months ago I committed myself to be in South Africa on this date; thus I am unable to be with you now. But although I cannot be with you in person, I am with you in spirit.
We are grateful to His Grace Krsnacandra Prabhu and the other organizers of Bhaktivedanta Hospital for their great contribution to the spiritual and material well-being of both the general populace and the devotees, under the spiritual guidance of His Holiness Radhanath Swami Maharaja.
In Srimad-Bhagavatam Sri Prahlada Maharaja prays to the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krsna in the form of Lord Nrsimhadeva, bÄlasya neha Ćaraáčaáč pitarau náčsiáčha nÄrtasya cÄgadam: âMy Lord Nrsimhadeva, O Supreme, because of a bodily conception of life, embodied souls neglected and not cared for by You cannot do anything for their betterment. Whatever remedies they accept, although perhaps temporarily beneficial, are certainly impermanent. For example, a father and mother cannot protect their child, a physician and medicine cannot relieve a suffering patient, and a boat on the ocean cannot protect a drowning man.â (SB 7.9.19)
Commenting on the above verse, Srila Prabhupada remarks, âWe are opening hospitals with beds. We may do that, but at the same time the patients must be Krsna conscious. We have practical examples. Some of our devotees go to the hospitals, and the patients purchase our books and become devotees. Even in the hospital beds theyâre reading Srimad-Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita and benefiting. That is the real remedy, so after being cured theyâll become devotees. This literature is the cure. . . . Krsna consciousness is the real cure. Without Krsnaâs protection, all other measures are useless. Therefore we have to teach people how to take shelter of Krsna.â (SP lecture on SB 7.9.19)
We are pleased that Bhaktivedanta Hospital will give patients the real cure â Krsna consciousness â along with the ordinary medicine. Here patients will be blessed with the association of the Lordâs devotees. Although material life entails suffering, the association of Lord Krsnaâs devotees and the shelter of Lord Krsnaâs lotus feet can save us. As confirmed by Prahlada Maharaja, mahÄ«yasÄáč pÄda-rajo-âbhiáčŁekaáč: âUnless human society accepts the dust of the lotus feet of great devotees who have nothing to do with material possessions, mankind cannot turn its attention to the lotus feet of Krsna. Those lotus feet vanquish all the unwanted miserable conditions of material life.â (SB 7.5.32)
We also feel indebted to the devotees of the hospital for the great service they will render to other devotees. Although devotees do not identify with the body, they engage the body in the Lordâs service. So for the sake of Krsnaâs service they take care of the body. Thus the hospital will serve the devotees and ultimately the Lord by affording devotees complete medical care in a spiritual atmosphere. Devotees from throughout the world may come and avail of the facilities.
We wish the Bhaktivedanta Hospital and all associated with it all success. May Srila Prabhupada, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and Sri Sri Radha and Krsna bless this great effort.
Hare Krsna!
Your servant,
Giriraj Swami

Dear Giriraja Swami,
please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
Your quote where Srila Prabhupada says: âWe are opening hospitals with beds. We may do that, but at the same time the patients must be Krsna consciousâ is very strange because, I canât find it anywhere in folio. You are mentioning that Srila Prabhupada said this on lecture on SB 7.9.19, but in folio, I can find only one lecture on this verse, given on February 26, 1976 in Mayapur, where Prabhupada says:
So they do not see to this, that in spite of our so much advancement of civilization, hospitals and other relief measures, why still people are suffering? You are increasing hospital or beds of hospital. You are very much proud that âWe have opened hospitals.â That⊠What does it mean? That means people have become diseased. You have opened hospitals, you are very much proud, but what is the other side? Other side: that people have increased their diseased condition. That they do not see. They are simply proud of increasing hospital. Why there should be hospital? Why not stop disease? That is scientific advancement. Stop disease, and there will be no need of opening hospital. Krsna therefore presents in the Bhagavad-gĂ©tĂ€ that âYou rascal, you see. Real problem is janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi [Bg. 13.9].â You can invent very nice, up-to-date, modernized medicine, but why donât you stop disease? That you cannot do. That is not possible.
So, it seems that you provided false quote, can you please investigate, because I find that hard to believe that you did it on purpose.
your servant,
Hanuman das
